Targeted and mass testing for coronavirus took place May 21 for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation in southeastern North Dakota and northeastern South Dakota.
Samples were taken from 305 individuals during a joint operation involving agencies from both states, the tribe, Indian Health Service and local public health authorities.
Oral swabs were administered to front-line tribal workers, along with casino employees and the general public. The drive-through event took place in the parking lot of the Dakota Magic Casino, where lanes were set up according to state residency.
Both North Dakota and South Dakota contributed test kits to the operation.
Partnering with the tribe to conduct the testing were personnel from the North Dakota National Guard, North Dakota and South Dakota Departments of Health, North Dakota and South Dakota counties and the Indian Health Service.
